Robert Pattinson

Let’s not talk about how long Kristen Stewart and R-Pattz have been dating. Let’s not talk about which bar he usually frequents in LA. And let’s not talk about how supposedly sexy his hair is.

Let’s talk about Robert Pattinson’s acting and the films he has done so far.

In my humble opinion, R. Pattz is both overrated and underrated. As we all know, Robert Pattinson is just an okay Edward. To be honest, he is too old to play a 17 year-old. I think the make-up and the clothes only made him look slightly younger. ‘Boyish’ and ‘Lanky’ were the two words Bella used to describe Edward. R. Pattz definitely is thin (I am not really convinced that he has 6-pack, even though he stripped and went semi-naked in New moon), but boyish? Anyone with eyes could tell this young man is in his early twenties.

Also, Edward Cullen is a vampire, an extremely old-fashioned gentleman, , a mind-reader, a stalker, a virgin, and a control freak. I don’t think R. Pattz played him to a very satisfactory extent. The angst was there, the longing was there, the seductiveness was there, but R. Pattz kind of lacked the arrogance and confidence. Edward had an air about him, which probably is not something that can be easily mastered or imitated.

In The Bad mother’s handbook, Daniel’s shyness and attentiveness were delivered. We love Daniel Gale because he was beautifully played by R. Pattz. Daniel was a nice boy from a family no less complicated than Charlotte’s. He tried to get used to his new home and the new school. He looked after Charlotte as the latter’s mother was too self- absorbed too care about anything but herself. He himself was no stranger to family drama, either. Between his nearly broken family and the new town that he probably was not fond of, Charlotte was the only person that could keep him sane. Altogether Daniel Gale was admirable and adorable. Well done, R. Pattz.

In How To Be, Art’s silliness, awkwardness, and desperation for becoming more ‘normal’ were so convincing and uncontrived that I still suspect Art was what R. Pattz was like before he became the sex symbol we hear and see on the television screen. Art, furthermore, was dying to get a right job in order to use his supposed musical talent (funny how R. Pattz really can sing and is a good pianist). R. Pattz himself once admitted that he was worse than Art, such claim must have broken quite a few hearts.

The storyline of Remember Me is not spectacular, it really is not. But I thought I actually saw the true Robert Pattinson in the film. Tyler smoked and drank entirely too much. He was slightly rakish and had a very troubled heart. Maybe it was just me, but I had – and I still do – no difficulty picturing R. Pattz imbibing a huge amount of alcohol and smoking like a chimney. I thought the first scene of the film somewhat showed us what R. Pattz was like in real life. The tension and problems between Tyler and his dad (played by Pierce Brosnan) were great and remarkably portrayed. Robert did a great job in a scene where Tyler snapped at his dad: “What was the subject?” The young man’s annoyance and anger were clear and believable. There was another short yet brilliant scene where Tyler had a very unpleasant conversation with his dad on the phone. After hearing an indifferent reply from his seemingly cold father, Tyler cursed quietly and made a scrunchy face. The scene, in my opinion, was one of the most brilliant performances of Robert Pattinson's.

Compared with the resigned, kind-hearted, and nerdy Daniel from The Bad mother’s handbook, the desperate, needy and somewhat ridiculous Art from How to be, and the aggressive, slightly depressed and ill-tempered Tyler from Remember Me, R. Pattz’s performances in Twilight and New Moon did not deliver as they could have.

I have not seen Little Ashes and the whole Harry Potter series is just too cumbersome (in a way I just can't stand Harry Potter). So I cannot make any comments on Robert’s acting in either of the films.

New Moon the movie was so disappointing that I still want to strangle Chris Weitz. Guys, let’s be simple about this – what does a middle-aged man know about a 17-year-old girl’s heart and world? Twilight the movie was good. I think it was because the budget was so low that the crew tried their best and the film did turn out to be a success. And the budget increased considerably as Summit must have known that New Moon was going to be a global madness. Instead of producing a beautiful masterpiece, Chris Weitz ruined film and is still unaware of it. I don’t expect much from Eclipse, the upcoming film based on the third instalment of the saga. The book itself is highly controversial. I believe there are still people arguing about whether Bella should or should not have kissed Jacob, or whether Edward should or should not have been so manipulative, or whether Jacob was annoying or not. But I am not going to talk about any of those topics, I am completely over them now (Riley and Bree seem promising, though).

I wonder how Robert Pattinson is going survive after the Twilight saga. Will we still find him irresistible? What film will he choose to do in order to strengthen his already overwhelming stardom? Will he submerge into obscurity like Orlando Bloom did? Will he become a workaholic just like keira knightly? I wonder.
